Over the last year or so I’ve got my hands on these three Vintage Contemporaries editions of Raymond Carver’s books What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Fires and Cathedral. I absolutely love the covers on these books, and in fact I specifically held off buying newer editions of Carver’s stuff just in case I found more of these. The books credit Garnet Henderson with the illustration and Lorraine Louie with the cover design. These covers are great: the way the light plays, the solitary figures cut out in their domestic settings. Much better than those of the newest editions of these titles, which are sterile, inoffensive and boring (which seems, unfortunately, to be the style with new books).
